Chris Cornell cause of death confirmed: suicide by hanging

Medical officials have confirmed that renowned musician, Chris Cornell, died as a result of suicide by hanging.

"The cause of death has been determined as hanging by suicide," Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement.

The medical examiner's office however, did make clear that the full autopsy report was still to be completed.

Brian Bumbery, Cornell's representative, called his death "sudden and unexpected".

The musician, 52, was found hanging in his MGM Grand Detroit hotel room on Wednesday by a family friend. His death came as a shock, as he had just hours before performed a show in the city.

Cornell and his award-winning band Soundgarden had kicked off their current tour in late April, which was slated to run until May 27.

The singer and songwriter gained critical and commercial acclaim with all his music projects, even those outside of Soundgarden. These included his solo projects and his participation in the bands Audioslave and Temple of the Dog.

Cornell was also involved in collaborations on movie soundtracks, including the James Bond theme song for 2006's Casino Royale and a Golden Globe nomination for the soundtrack for the Gerard Butler-led movie, Machine Gun Preacher.
